The Jain community has asked its followers, especially young couples, to have more kids after witnessing slight decline in population. The community has also rolled out sops for couples who will have more than two kids. The Jain population was 42 lakh of the total Indian population of 102 crore in 2001; ten years later, the Census of 2011 revealed, it rose to 44 lakh, with India’s total population also rising to 120 crore. According to the latest National Family Health Survey, the fertility rate (average number of children a woman can have during her childbearing years) among Jains is 1.2.
