नयी दिल्ली शीर्ष वायरस विज्ञानी गगनदीप कांग ने शुक्रवार को कहा कि के किसी नये स्वरूप के नहीं आने पर महामारी की तीसरी लहर दूसरी लहर जैसी भयावह नहीं होगी। उन्होंने वायरस के नये स्वरूपों से निपट सकने वाले बेहतर टीके विकसित करने की जरूरत और नियामक तंत्र मजबूत करने पर जोर दिया। दूसरी लहर की तरह भयावह नहीं होगी तीसरी वेव कांग ने कहा, ‘जब तक नया स्वरूप नहीं आएगा, तीसरी लहर उतनी भयावह नहीं होगी जितना कि हमने दूसरी लहर के दौरान सामना किया था।’ देश में मार्च और मई के बीच महामारी की दूसरी लहर के दौरान हजारों लोग मारे गये थे और लाखों लोग संक्रमित हुए थे तथा स्वास्थ्य ढांचा चरमरा गया था। कांग ने कहा, ‘क्या हम कोविड से निपट चुके हैं? नहीं, हम नहीं निपट सके हैं। क्या हम कोविड से निजात पाने जा रहे है? निकट भविष्य में नहीं। ’ क्रिश्चन मेडिकल कॉलेज, वेल्लोर में प्राध्यापक कांग ने सीआईआई लाइफसाइंसेज कॉनक्लेव को डिजिटल माध्यम से संबोधित कर रही थीं। अक्टूबर-नवंबर तक तीसरी लहर का अनुमान गौरतलब है कि देश में कोविड-19 के मामलों में वृद्धि का अनुमान लगाने की जिम्मेदारी विशेषज्ञों की जिस तीन सदस्यीय टीम को सौंपी गई है उसमें शामिल भारतीय प्रौद्योगिकी संस्थान-कानपुर के वैज्ञानिक मनींद्र अग्रवाल ने कहा था कि सितंबर तक कारोना वायरस का एक कहीं अधिक प्रसार करने वाला वायरस सामने आने पर देश में अक्टूबर-नवंबर के बीच तीसरी लहर चरम पर पहुंच सकती है। अभी काफी सफर तय करना है- कांग कांग ने कहा कि भारतीय टीका उद्योग महामारी से निपटने में पूरी तरह अभूतपूर्व रूप से काम किया है लेकिन इसे अभी भी काफी सफर तय करना है। उन्होंने कहा, ‘लेकिन मैं (नियामक प्रणाली के बारे में) यहीं चीज नहीं कह सकती क्योंकि लोग हमारी नियामक प्रणाली के बारे में जानते हैं। लेकिन यह कुछ ऐसी चीज है जिसका हमें भविष्य के लिए एक सबक के तौर पर उपयोग करना चाहिए क्योंकि हमें सचमुच में जानकारी रखने वाले, मजबूत नियामकों की जरूरत है, जो जरूरत के अनुसार उद्योगों के साथ काम कर सके।’
