नई दिल्ली यूं तो साल के सभी दिन महत्वपूर्ण होते हैं और हर दिन किसी न किसी वजह से इतिहास के पन्नों में दर्ज है। आज साल के 5वें महीने का अंतिम दिन है और यह भी बहुत सी घटनाओं के साथ इतिहास में दर्ज है। इनमें सबसे महत्वपूर्ण घटना भारतीय राष्ट्रीय कांग्रेस के झंडे को अंगीकार किया जाना है। 1921 में गांधीजी ने 31 मई के दिन ही भारतीय राष्ट्रीय कांग्रेस के ध्वज को स्वीकृत और संशोधित किया। यह मूल रूप से आंध्र प्रदेश के एक व्यक्ति ने डिजाइन किया गया था, जिसमें हिंदू और मुस्लिम समुदायों का प्रतिनिधित्व करने वाले लाल और हरे रंग की पट्टियों को स्थान दिया गया था। वर्ष 1921 में बेजवाड़ा (अब विजयवाड़ा) में आयोजित अखिल भारतीय कांग्रेस कमेटी के सत्र के दौरान आंध्र प्रदेश के एक युवक ने एक झंडा बनाया और गांधी जी को दिया। यह दो रंगों का बना था। लाल और हरा रंग जो दो प्रमुख समुदायों अर्थात हिन्दू और मुस्लिम का प्रतिनिधित्व करता है। गांधी जी ने सुझाव दिया कि भारत के शेष समुदाय का प्रतिनिधित्व करने के लिए इसमें एक सफेद पट्टी और राष्ट्र की प्रगति का संकेत देने के लिए एक चलता हुआ चरखा होना चाहिए। देश दुनिया के इतिहास में 31 मई की तारीख में दर्ज अन्य महत्वपूर्ण घटनाओं का सिलसिलेवार ब्यौरा इस प्रकार है:- 1577 : मुगल सम्राट जहांगीर की पत्नी नूरजहां का जन्म। 1727 : फ्रांस, ब्रिटेन और नीदरलैंड ने पेरिस संधि पर हस्ताक्षर किए। 1759 : अमेरिका के उत्तर पूर्वी प्रांत पेंसिलवेनिया में थियेटर के सभी कार्यक्रमों पर प्रतिबंध लगाया गया। 1878 : जर्मनी का युद्धपोत एसएमएस ग्रोसर करफर्स्ट के डूबने से 284 लोगों की मौत। 1889 : अमेरिका के पेंसिलवेनिया स्थित जांसटाउन में भीषण बाढ़ से 2200 से अधिक लोगों की मौत। 1900 : लार्ड राबर्टस के नेतृत्व में ब्रिटिश सैनिकों ने जोहान्सबर्ग पर कब्जा किया। 1907 : अमेरिका के न्यूयार्क शहर में पहली टैक्सी सेवा शुरू। 1921 : भारतीय राष्ट्रीय कांग्रेस के झंडे को अंगीकार किया गया। 1935 : पाकिस्तान के क्वेटा शहर में भीषण भूकंप से 50 हजार से अधिक लोगों की मौत। 1959 :बौद्ध धर्म गुरु दलाई लामा को तिब्बत से निर्वासन के बाद भारत में शरण दी गई। 1966 : दक्षिणी वियतनाम के शासन के विरोध में ह्यू शहर में वियतनाम की बौद्ध युवती ने खुद को आग लगाकर जान दे दी। आग की लपटों से घिरी युवती की तस्वीर ने दुनियाभर में तहलका मचा दिया। बौद्ध समुदाय सैन्य सरकार की अगुवाई करने वाले प्रधानमंत्री का इस्तीफ़ा मांग रहा था। 1977 : भारतीय सेना के एक दल ने पहली बार विश्व के तीसरे सबसे ऊंचे पर्वत शिखर कंचनजंगा पर चढ़ाई की। 2008 : विश्व के सबसे तेज धावक उसैन बोल्ट ने 100 मीटर दौड़ 9.72 सेकंड में पूरी कर विश्व रिकार्ड बनाया।
